1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
How the Program Works
Use READsquared to create an account and log the books you read to your child. If you do not want to manage an account for your child, contact the library and the staff can keep the record for you.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a program created by the 1000 Books Foundation of Nevada. The mission of this organization is to promote reading to infants and toddlers. For more information about this program visit their website.
What do I need to do?
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really, if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started).
Materials and Rewards
You may participate in this program through your READsquared Account, using no other materials, or you can contact the library and we can input your reading logs for you. We also have the option of a paper reading long that you can use to keep track of the books you read.
Small prizes and rewards are earned for every 100 books read, with the goal of having read 1000 books to your child by the time they start kindergarten.
With each milestone, your child’s name will be recorded on our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Wall of Fame!
